Cretan olive grove in evening light

Malevizi · Heraklion, Crete

Our soap begins in our family's olive groves

I am a pharmacist, my sister is a chemist. We make cold process soap with the olive oil we harvest ourselves in our groves in Malevizi, Crete.

  • Olive oil from our own harvest
  • Cured for 6 weeks

01The grove

I know every tree that goes into the bar

Our groves are in Malevizi, just west of Heraklion in Crete. I grew up there, we still harvest there as a family, and that is where the oil comes from — dense, green, still smelling of the field.

Malevizi has produced olive oil since Minoan times: at Tylissos, a few kilometres from our trees, excavations uncovered storerooms full of huge oil jars. Later, under Venetian and Ottoman rule, oil from these hills went down to the harbour of Heraklion and fed the soap works of the Mediterranean. Soap here isn't a trend — it is the oldest use of our oil.

I don't buy oil from anyone. I bring it from our own harvest into the workshop and weigh it myself. That is why I can tell you exactly what touches your skin.

“If I wouldn't put it on my own skin, it doesn't go in the mould.”

But good oil alone doesn't make good soap. It also takes someone who knows what they're doing.

02The decision

One pharmacist,
one chemist

In the pharmacy I saw people every day with irritated, tight skin from soaps full of sulphates and fragrance. I knew the best raw material was already at home. So we started ANODY together — with my sister, Eirini Odyseaki, a chemist and co-founder.

  • pH tested in every batch
  • Weighed, documented ratios
  • Dermatologically mild formulas
  • Traceable from tree to bar

And then begins the work that refuses to be rushed.

03The workshop

Four
stages
of patience

Cold process is not just a technique; it is the decision not to rush. Every bar goes through the same four stages, with no shortcuts.

Cold process soap batter poured into a wooden mould
01

Weighing

Every oil is weighed to the gram. The ratio is written on the batch sheet before anything is mixed.

02

Saponification

Low temperature, so the fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants of the olive oil stay alive inside the bar.

03

Curing

Six weeks on wooden racks. Time makes the bar harder, milder and longer lasting in the shower.

04

Control

We measure pH and stability. Whatever fails the check never leaves the workshop.

Out of that process come four bars.

04The bars

Four bars, one base recipe

Same olive oil, same patience. Only the herb or the butter changes — choose for your skin, not for the scent.
